Nicole, you're exactly right. In Wilmington, Raleigh, Asheville etc..., abandoned buildings seem really out of place. But in Rocky Mount, the downtown buildings that are occupied seem really out of place. It's bad.

Wow, it's so sad to see these buildings in this condition. Looking at them I can see the potential beauty if only they were restored. Really makes you appreciate the historic restorations here in Wilmington.

A very interesting and enlightening article!

It's so weird to think that cities are able to expand and sprawl out at such a rate and under such conditions that they cannot even be maintained.

Hopefully we are on the verge of people in charge really examining sustainability and actually APPLYING some of the knowledge they have so that future developing cities can avoid these totally unnecessary problems.

It would be cool if Jakarta can actually work out many of these problems and be a model for other developing areas.

I just found this interview after I posted this and thought it was pretty interesting. Regarding District 9 + the Halo film Jackson was planning on making:

Would District 9 exist without Halo?

[Jackson]:District 9 was definitely born out of the Halo film ruins, and we wouldn't have seen this movie if Halo had gone ahead. I have always felt that if fate is taking you somewhere, don't fight it. We realized that we had a real talent in Neill Blomkamp, so we decided to find a project for him and we decided to build a story around his Live in Joburg short film.

read the whole thing here: http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/24/peter-jackson-tells-joystiq-about-the-halo-movie-video-games/

Jennifer,

The chemicals and hormones in our food are defiantly scary. Something else that's crazy, which the movie discusses, are the Food libel laws, which make it easy for food companies to sue you for criticizing the food they produce. We aren't supposed to know what's in our food and we aren't supposed to complain about it.

Thanks for the review! I am by no means educated on this subject, and want to go see the move to become more educated. I do worry about all of the hormones and chemicals that are making their way into foodstreams and bodies.
